The Hill of Allen
is a volcanic hill, part of the Chair of Kildare,
and is famous in myth and legend. Known originally as
the Hill of Almhu, it was once the headquarters of the
Fiainna, led by Fionn MacCumhaill. He is the most famous
character in the Irish storytelling tradition, and the
Hill is mentioned regularly in the many stories of Fionn
and the Fianna.
Post Fionn, the Hill had a hugely important administrative,
military and ritual place in Leinster, as well as being
a landmark for travellers to Munster through the Dark
and Middle Ages.
In the latter half of the 20th century and in the early
years of the 21st Century, the Hill of Allen has become
profoundly threatened by quarrying by Roadstone Dublin
Ltd.
